The History of Smithtown, NY
The town was first settled around 1650. Legend has it that a man named Richard Smythe was told by Native Americans that he could get title to as much land as he could ride around on with a bull during one day. The land he acquired in this way is said to approximate the current town's location. There is a large statue of Smythe's bull, known as Whisper, on the town's Main Street.
